Looking for:

prednisolone

The medicinal product should preferably be taken as a single dose in the morning. Prednisolone is rapidly and apparently almost completely absorbed after oral administration; it reaches peak plasma concentrations after 1-3 hours. There is however wide inter-subject variation suggesting impaired absorption in some individuals.

Don’t do this without speaking to your doctor or surgeon first though, as in some cases you might be able to carry on taking them, and you may need to have your dose changed before the operation. If you have any questions or concerns about this, talk to the healthcare professional who prescribed your steroids. If you're taking high doses of steroids, or if you're on them for more than three weeks, you'll need to carry a steroid card. This will have information on your dose and how long you've been taking them for. The person treating you will make sure you’re on the lowest possible dose to keep your condition under control. You might also be given a drug called a proton pump inhibitor or another medicine to protect your stomach.

The protocols from area to area do vary so contact your usual GP to organise. Let us compare these 1000 people taking drug X compared with 1000 people not taking drug X where they are saying there is a 50% increased risk of having a baby born with cleft lip and palate. The risk of a baby being born with ANY congenital abnormality is quoted as being around 5% or 50 per 1000 births Some of these abnormalities are minor, such as skin blemishes, abnormalities of fingers and toes etc. Major congenital abnormality rates are quoted as 2-3% or 20 – 30 per 1000 births. Medications taken after 12 weeks cannot usually cause major congenital abnormalities in any major organ system because these are already fully developed at this stage.

Also if anyone has had treatment and gone on to successfully have their babies did you have to stay in for a few days to monitor the baby at all. Most medications are labelled ‘not for use in pregnancy’ as, by and large, drugs are not tested on pregnant women. It is therefore difficult to guarantee that drugs are safe for use in pregnancy, especially with newer drugs, where the number of pregnancies studied is still low. In addition to this, animal studies that may have been carried out are often not applicable to humans.

Corticosteroids are powerful medications that can sometimes have side effects. They shouldn't be used if you have an ongoing widespread infection. However, you should continue to take corticosteroids if you develop an infection whilst taking them. Prednisolone is licensed at a dose of 2 mg per kilogramme to a maximum of 60 mg in children over the age of 2 years.

If first line treatment is started early enough, then further treatment may not be needed. Current guidelines say that some steroid tablets, including prednisolone, can be taken during pregnancy. They’re often used to treat flare-ups in women who are pregnant. The vaccine against the most common cause of pneumonia and yearly flu vaccines don’t interact with steroid tablets, as they’re not live vaccines. It’s important that you have these vaccinations to reduce your chances of getting these infections.

30 years ago I went to an Endocrinologist who specialized in Infertility. He looked at my ovulation temperature charts, and put me on Prednisolone 2.5mg a day and I became pregnant within 3 months. Three years later I went back on same dose and got pregnant the first month.

It is based on the RCOG guidelineAntenatal corticosteroids to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality . The guideline contains a full list of the sources of evidence we have used. If you are unlikely to give birth in 7 days, you should not receive steroids. Even if you are at higher risk of giving birth early you won’t be given steroids unless you are likely to give birth in the next 7 days.

Steroids can make some conditions worse so your medical team may need to monitor your condition more closely. If you’re taking oral steroids, you may start to feel better within a week, but it could take up to a month after starting treatment. You’ll usually feel better after a week or two if you’re taking rectal steroids. If you’re taking intravenous steroids, you may feel better after few days, but it can take up to 10 days after starting treatment.
